Consensus Meeting

Date

June 24, 2025 *KST (UTC/GMT +9)

*Summary Session: June 27, 2025

Main Topic

Minimally Invasive Major Liver Resections (MIMLR)

reflecting the significant advancements in laparoscopic and robotic liver surgery over the past decade.

Experts will analyze the latest evidence, refine key questions, and propose consensus statements.
The conference follows the Danish-Zurich model, ensuring a rigorous and collaborative review process.
Join us in shaping the future of MIMLR!

4 Topics

Topic 1 Definition of Minimally Invasive Major Hepatectomy (MIMH) 08:30-10:00
  • Q1-1. What is the proper definition of MIMH? (Expert Questionnaire)
Minimally invasive major hepatectomy includes right anterior sectionectomy and right posterior sectionectomy as well as the resection of 3 or more segments that includes left/extended left hepatectomy, right/extended right hepatectomy, and central hepatectomy.

  • Q1-2. Can MIMH be further classified according to the operative complexity?
Left hepatectomy, right hepatectomy, extended left hepatectomy, extended right hepatectomy. right anterior sectionectomy, right posterior resectionectomy and central bisectionectomy.

    1.Literature review
    2. Rating the difficulty based on an international survey of experts
3.Investigating the difficulty levels of these various types of MIMH by analyzing the data of International robotic and laparoscopic liver resection study group investigators (cooperated by Brian K GO)
  • Propose a new difficulty score system of MIMH
Topic 2 Short- and Long-term Outcomes after MIMLR 10:30-12:00
  • Q2-1. What are the short-term outcomes after MIMLR surgery compared to open hepatectomy in terms of complications, mortality, margin negativity and recovery time?

  • Q2-2. What are the short-term outcomes, including length of stay, complications, and operative times, between laparoscopic and robotic approaches in MIMIR?

  • Q2-3. What is the role of using benchmarking and textbook results for short-term performance assessment of MIMLR?

  • Q2-4. What is the impact of conversion from MIMLR to open surgery on both short-term outcomes, such as morbidity and hospital readmission rates, and long-term outcomes, including recurrence rates and overall survival?

  • Q2-5. What are the long-term oncological outcomes, such as disease-free survival and overall survival, after MIMLR compared with open hepatectomy in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma, colorectal liver metastasis, and intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma?

  • Q2-6. How do long-term outcomes, including recurrence and survival rates, differ between laparoscopic and robotic approaches in MIMLR?
Topic 3 Updated Surgical Techniques of MIMLR 13:00-14:30
  • Q3-1. Is there any updated concept for minimally invasive anatomic resection in addition to the caudal approach?

  • Q3-2. What are the role and advantages of 3-D reconstructive software program?

  • Q3-3. What is the role of intraoperative ICG navigation (tumor localization and overlay technique) for MIMLR?

  • Q3-4. What are the new navigation modalities intraoperatively available and their usefulness for MIMLR? (Augmented reality, Real time AI navigation-assisted anatomical recognition)
Topic 4 Training and Expertise in MIMLR 15:00-16:30
  • Q4-1. What should be the training requirement and optimal training program for a surgeon to start MIMLR?

  • Q4-2. What are the optimal learning curves for laparoscopic and robotic approaches for MIMLR, respectively?

  • Q4-3. What is the effect of the professional societies on the development of laparoscopic liver resection including major hepatectomies?
